Girls Sing!!!

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Days like today define what camp is all about. Camp was buzzing about Girls Sing all day. All you saw throughout camp were clusters of girls practicing for the big show. The spirit and tradition that embody this camp favorite is a highlight of our summer. The costumes, the themes, the dances and songs. All of girls camp was excited to get on stage with their division and show their love for camp and the bonds that they share with their camp sisters. It is truly an amazing night here at Chen-A-Wanda and girls camp didn’t disappoint.

All 51 of our Junioritas performed the salsa and danced with that Latin flare. The Middies went Greek and wore togas. The Inters got married and all the brides and grooms walked down the isle together. Our Collegiates broke out of jail as they rocked the night away. Our Senior Citizens hobbled onto the stage with canes and grey hair strutting their stuff. The Supers were Superstitious in their dazzling performance of Disturbia. Our GC’s went GaGa tonight in a truly entertaining performance that embodied the essence of Lady GaGa. And finally, the CIT’s drifted into our hearts as The Pirates of the Caribbean.

There could only be one winner for Lower camp and the honor this evening went to our Inters. Congratulations to our happily married division. Upper camp was a tough decision but tonight’s honors went to our Pirated Princess CIT’s. The CIT’s ended the night by blowing out their candles and bidding their last summer adieu. Very heartfelt and emotional and goosebumps were on everyone in the house. Girls Sing 2010 will be a hard act to follow. Oh what a great night at CAW.

Powder Puff

Friday, July 30th, 2010

We had a late wake up today and the Supers, GC’s and CIT’s were grateful to have the extra sleep after getting back late from their Big Trip. The rest of camp was also appreciative to have a sleep in morning. Our camp pace is steady and fast and having a relaxing morning is a nice treat. Then it was off to activities and a full day of play. Camp was full of girls side practicing for Girls Sing. All the divisions were practicing their dances and songs for Saturday night’s big show. A tremendous amount of creativity, practice and dedication goes into Girls Sing and the whole camp gets in the spirit of this CAW camp tradition.  We can’t wait for the show and watching all the girls practice, this is going to be a night to remember from the Juniors all the way up to the CIT’s.

Tonight’s evening activity was a show stopper. It was our GC  girls vs. our CIT’s playing in a rough and tumble game of Powder Puff football. The boys in each division were the cheerleaders and they got the crowd on their feet. It was a good game but the GC’s were no match for our CIT girls who won the competition. Our talented dance team entertained us at halftime with their fabulous moves. It was a great night of football and we all had a fantastic time outside under the lights. Summer nights like these will stay in our minds forever if either you played in the game or watched on the sidelines.  Making memories and friendships that last a lifetime is what we do here at Chen-A-Wanda.

Another Great Day Here at Camp Paradise

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

You know how some day’s just feel GREAT? It’s in the air and everyone is in a good mood. Well, that was today at Chen-A-Wanda. You couldn’t help but smile all through the day and it was contagious. Fun, fun and more fun!!!

The Supers, GC’s and CIT/Waiters had a great time today at The Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame. They enjoyed their Big Trip and are headed back to camp. We missed them and are looking forward to seeing them tomorrow morning.

Tonight, we were entertained by our second Camper Talent Show. We couldn’t fit them all into one show so our second half performed tonight and boy what a show it was. We sang, we danced, we told jokes and we had an AMAZING time tonight. The crowd cheered on the performers and sang along with them. The day’s great mood spilled over into the night and again, it was contagious. The audience was on it’s feet, cheering on all the talented kids that took center stage. All who performed, walked off that stage 1000 feet tall. Where else can you muster up the nerve to perform in front of a packed house, sing and dance your heart out and know that the whole camp will be cheering your name? You do it here at camp, that’s where!!!

Trick or Treat

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Today was a full day of games and activities. The waterfront was packed and full of happy campers swimming in the lake, getting blobbed off the trampoline and sliding down the water slide.  A picture perfect day at camp. It was too beautiful to eat indoors so we had a picnic dinner outside. The campers were loving the relaxed picnic BBQ and we all enjoyed being outside.

After evening line-up it was off to get dressed up in our Halloween costumes. We all went into the Rec Hall and had a giant costume contest. The costumes were fantastic, creative and fun. The entire camp caught the spirit and as we had the campers walk the runway to show off their creative costumes, our judges were deciding who was to win the fabulous prizes. Each division had a winner and that winner was able to choose a pizza or wings party for their bunk. After the contest it was off to trick or treat. Each group traveled to different spots throughout camp as they filled their bags with candy. The Senior girls held a Haunted House in their bunk as the camp went through the ghoulish maze. It was October in July here at CAW and felt like the best Halloween ever. One that we will remember forever. What could be better than trick or treating with our summer family?

The laughter, the smiles, the memories we will never forget. Our summer is so amazing. How lucky we are to have each other and have this place that truly is our summer home.

When Upper Camp Is Away … Lower Camp Will Play

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

The Supers, GC’s and CITs/Waits left early this morning for their trip to Cleveland. They all boarded the buses eager to start their adventure and off they went. They arrived at the hotel early afternoon, unpacked and got back on the bus to head to Progressive Field to watch the Cleveland Indians host the New York Yankees. It was a perfect night for a ballgame. We were sitting in right field and in the 7th inning, A Rod was at bat and hit a dinger that we all thought would be his 600th home run but it just fell short. As the sea of red Chen-A-Wanda shirts covered right field, we all cheered on our home team. The Big Trip is starting off very well. We are off to Cedar Point Amusement Park tomorrow for some fun. Can’t wait.

The Seniors had their own overnight trip to Hershey Park and really enjoyed themselves. They got up early and headed to the park. With a full day of roller coasters and lots of chocolate, their day was amazingly delicious and fun. A very special overnight to our very special Seniors. Glad they had fun and we are glad they are back home.

So with all the big kids out on their trips, the camp was left to our Juniors, Middies, Inters and Collegiates and we had a Wet, Wild and Wacky Day! Camp was split into Red & Gold Teams and we spent the day playing games. We had a mass softball game, soccer tournaments, Mega Zone Battles, BBG games and more. It was a blast of a day and ended as we had an outdoor BBQ as we munched on burgers and dogs.

It was a BINGO night in the Rec Hall and the kids loved going for our fantastic prizes. A few of our winners left with, a wings party for their bunk, extended curfew for their division and even a hair straightening party. A great night back at camp and the best news about tonight is that when we wake up tomorrow, we get another amazing day at our summer home.

Marvelous Monday

Monday, July 26th, 2010

What a great day we had at camp. The sun was shining and there was a cool breeze that made being outside phenomenal. There were a lot games and tournaments being played outside camp today. Congratulations to our boys who ran for our track team. They placed 4th  in the track tournament. Our girls gymnastic team had a great time at their tournament. They placed 5th overall. Go girls!! Cheers to our flag football team who spent the day advancing in their tourney and brought home 2nd place trophies. Regardless of where our teams placed, the pride came when all the other camps had placed calls to us telling us how fantastic our kids were and how impressive their sportsmanship was while at their camps for all the games and competitions. We couldn’t be more proud and excited for their amazing show of ability, sportsmanship, dedication and teamwork. It’s great to be a Chenny kid!

As the afternoon ended, all the Seniors loaded the buses for their overnight to Hershey Park. They had a pizza party when they arrived and then headed off to their rooms to get a good night sleep before the big day at the park tomorrow. They were so excited for their very own trip.Go Seniors!

Juniors and Middies loaded their own bus and headed out to a night of bowling. We had the bowling alley all to ourselves and the kids loved it. We ate, played arcade games, bowled and hung out with friends. It was such an amazing night for our little ones.

The Inters and Collegiates went their own way and were off to the movies. They had a ball and loved getting to see all the new releases. A fun night full of friends, popcorn and the big screen. What could be better?

The Supers, GC’s and CIT’s/Waiters had camp all to themselves tonight as they packed for their big trip to Cleveland in the morning. Of course they had the traditional Road Ralley and then they enjoyed an ice cream party in the Cookhouse and got excited for their Big 3 Day Adventure.

As you probably see by now, no matter if you are a Junior or a CIT your experience at camp is always filled with adventure and joy because you have your friends right by your side experiencing all that summer camp offers.  No day is the same, no night is lonely. We all are going through it together.

Singin’ in the Rain

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

The morning was beautiful and we had some great games at camp today. Congratulations to our 4th grade girls who won their soccer game this morning to advance into the finals later this week. They were so excited and we are so proud of them. Soon after the game, down came the rain. We went into our rain activities for the afternoon. Relay races in the Rec Hall, games in the Dinning Hall and movies in the Chen-A-Plex. A great and relaxed afternoon at CAW.

As the sun set, we all got into our grass skirts and leis and headed into the Rec Hall for our mid summer social Luau.  We had Party Hardy here spinning the records and bringing the beats to Chen-A-Wanda.  The Rec Hall was bumpin’ and the kids were dancin’ all night long. It was great to rock the night away. We love it up here.

A Star is Born…

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

We woke up, and the lights were on and it was beautiful! The sun was shinning and our kids were ready for action. It was a fun filled day of glorious activities.

Rookies were abound; they were on the lake, on the trapeze, and and having so much fun.

Then it was time for the big show. We started with our final three, and they were great. Campers were entertained by Sofie Wolf, Jessica Leason, and Alyssa Innamarato as they sang their hearts out. Last year’s Chenny Idol Winner, Elliana Sutton graced the stage with her performance of “Lean on Me”.  Special guest Jesse Frankel also wowed the crowd with his version of “I’m Yours” At the end of the night the campers voted, and there could be only one winner. Sofie Wolf took the prize and has the honor of being Chenny Idol 2010. Sofie and her bunk/entourage will be taking a limo ride to a local restaurant to have a night on the town.

It was a great day at camp, and we can’t wait for tomorrow.

The lights were out but the kids were on

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

Oh what a day we had here at CAW yesterday. It was a rainy morning and the kids were inside playing all different types of games and activities. Lower camp boys had a mass dodge ball tournament inside the Rec Hall. Lower camp girls were in the Chen-A-Plex and Arts n’ Crafts. The Cookhouse was cookin’ and the School of Rock was rockin’. It was the a great indoor morning. The weather let up and we all got some time to run around in the afternoon.

Around 5:30pm, another beautiful summer storm rolled in and all the campers were in their bunks watching in amazement as the skies opened and the rain poured down.  We had a blackout up here and went into action. All the kids had free play until 8:30pm and then it was back to their bunks with flashlights and had a night they will never forget. All you could see as we walked through camp was a sea of flickering flashlights and giggles on girls side and boys singing songs and having dance parties in the dark.  Definitely a night that we will never forget.

The power was restored in the middle of the night and we are back in the groove this morning. We are having a blast here at camp no matter if the sun is shinning or the lights went out. We are all together, experiencing it with each other and loving every minute of it.

CAW Hits a Homerun of a Day!

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

We had a great day at camp this morning with activities and games. The schedule was geared around tonight’s baseball game so it was a packed morning then off to Binghamton for the Minor League Mets game. We all boarded the buses around 4:45pm and headed out. The weather was perfect and it was an ideal night to sit back, relax and watch a great baseball game. The campers had a fantastic time as they munched on hot dogs, pretzels and ice cream and cheered on the home team.  It was a perfect summer night.

There is something quite special about spending an evening with 400 terrific campers and a  spectacular staff, all together enjoying a magnificent night of baseball. We are family up here and nights like tonight shows how close we all are. No matter if you are junior or a CIT, we all know one another and are one BIG camp family. It is truly an awesome sight to witness how we are all so connected. When our Collegiate girls were dancing in their seats and shown on the jumbo tron, the rest of our group started to scream in excitement. It was a sea of  red Chenny shirts and boy do we have camp pride.

It’s a brunch morning tomorrow and we are all looking forward to getting a few extra zzzzz’s.
